6. Kanye vs. Wiz vs. Amber

Who can forget one of the first Hip-Hop feuds in early 2016 between Kanye, Wiz, and Amber Rose. To refresh your mind, the feud began when Kanye changed the title of his album to Waves, something that Wiz Khalifa took offense to since incarcerated rapper Max B came up with the term “Wavy.” Wiz felt Kanye wasn’t giving props to Max B by tweeting, “Max B is the wavy one. He created the wave. There is no wave without him.”

This led to an epic Twitter rant from Kanye, which also stemmed from his confusion of Wiz tweeting the letters “KK,” a strand of marijuana — Wiz’s strain. Kanye accused Wiz of stealing Kid Cudi’s style and called Wiz’s first single “corny.” Kanye then got personal, dragging his ex-girlfriend and Wiz’s ex-wife Amber Rose into it, tweeting, “You let a stripper trap you.”

Kanye eventually got the last laugh when he featured a phone call from Max B on his album. “The Life of Pablo” rapper did end up apologizing to Wiz after the feud.

7. The rise of Khaled’s Snapchat

It all started with a simple tweet by DJ Khaled telling his fans that he had a Snapchat account. Fast-forward to today, and everyone is following him for his daily dose of motivation, gardening, or nighttime jet ski adventures. It’s safe to say that DJ Khaled has in a matter of months transformed from the producer of some of our favorite Hip-Hop hits into a cultural icon. BLESS UP!

8. What’s Beef?

When it comes to hip-hop feuds nowadays, they either don’t occur as often or don’t last very long. Gone are the days of Jay Z and Nas beefs or 50 Cent and Ja Rule. But while rap beefs may have died down, we did see a few in 2016. From the The Game’s issues with Meek Mill to Joe Budden’s feud with Drake, and Kim and Kanye exposing Taylor Swift. Of course, we also can’t forget about 21 Savage and Tyga, or Beanie Sigel vs. Meek Mill. Issa lot.

9. Hamilton breaking record after record

What’s so great about Hamilton? That’s something you might well wonder if you’ve heard the deafening buzz around the musical, which filters the tale of Alexander Hamilton, an orphan immigrant turned founding father, through a prism of modern Hip-Hop. Its combination of 21st-century music and 18th-century history is amusing, entertaining and dazzlingly, but the show is also surprisingly moving. The musical really is everything: a drama, a comedy, a character study, a lesson, a romance, a war story, a historiographical critique.

10. A tribute to everyone we lost

The year 2016 showed no mercy when it came to our beloved music and cultural icons. Many music figures in the Hip-Hop, Rock Pop, and Blues worlds were sadly taken away from us. In Hip-hop, we lost A Tribe Called Quest’s own Phife Dawg, PM Dawn member Prince Be, Atlanta rappers Shawty Lo and Bankroll Fresh, to West Coast’s very own Ricky Harris.

In the world of Rock, we lost the legendary British singer David Bowie, who has influenced artists in all genres of music during his 50-year career.

One death that shook up the world was the untimely passing of Prince. The 57-year-old guitarist was found dead inside the elevator of his Paisley Park compound.

Outside of music, we mourned the passing of boxing icon and activist Muhammad Ali, while on Christmas Day, Pop icon George Michael passed away from heart failure.

Yeah, 2016 wasn’t fun in this regard.
