What was it like working with Kendrick Lamar for his To Pimp A Butterfly album?

Flippa: He’s the sh*t. During his album process I believe he was on tour and my publisher, Sam Taylor, gave me the opportunity and connected me with K.Dot and Dave Free. This one time Sam Taylor brought me in to meet him and play more music. One of the vibes he was f*ckin with heavy was the sample to the intro of “Wesley’s Theory”, The “Every N*gga Is a Star” sample, which I got from my mentor Pop Wansel. So I looped it and went in on it. He ended up cutting part of it into another song. Thats where Flying Lotus spazzed. Next thing you know, I’m a part of history. Salute to TDE. God is good.

What’s your routine for producing a beat, and how do you keep your production so unique?

Flippa: I’m all about the vibe. Energy is key. I like to listen to a lot of random sh*t. I think what makes my production so unique is my approach. I’m not the reggie type. I’m naturally diverse but still keep that n*gga in it. That grit. I go with whatever feels good, not chase what seems to be working at the time. Having the big homies I’ve had in my life definitely has a lot to do with it. I was like a sponge as a youngin’. Now I’m a beast, and I am nowhere near my prime. That’s the scary part.

Growing up, when did you decide you were going to be a great producer?

Flippa: Honestly, there wasn’t a moment in time where I said I’m going to be a great producer. It’s been a gift and a passion since I was creepin out the womb. God chose my path.
