You can be heard on a lot of different singles with T.I., B.o.B, Chris Brown. What is it like working with them?

Victoria Monet: Kind of crazy because sometimes you can get a little bit starstruck but after your realize they’re in the creative mode just like you and they go through the same thing that you do it ends up being really easy and most of the people I run with are down to earth and relatable. I haven’t ran into diva troubles or anything.

Is there anyone that would get you starstruck?

Victoria Monet: That artist would have to be Beyonce but I haven’t met her yet. The closest I been is like I know her choreographer so he sat me a few rows back and I already was like “Oh my God.” She looks so different in person, everyone looks a little bit smaller in person and she’s gorgeous and so talented and such a icon. If I met her I would be so starstruck.

With Atlantic Records backing you how do you feel like that will support your career?

Victoria Monet: Honestly speaking, whether your signed to a label or not your work ethic has to be the same. So I’m working the same as if I’m not signed. So when I get that radio single and everything is ready to go I definitely feel like they have that Top 40 reachability because they have Bruno and Wiz, so they’re good.

How do you differentiate what tracks to keep for yourself?

Victoria Monet: I feel like my sound as an artist is a lot different from what I would give to Ariana [Grande]. I try not to think about it during the creative process but afterwards I’ll listen to it and vibe with it and imagine myself on stage and singing it,  what the lyrics are saying and say “You know what? This is better for Ariana.”

As a songwriter what’s your creative process? Do you lock yourself in a room?

Victoria Monet: I am more private because naturally I’m an introvert and like to zone out a little bit. I don’t mind having people around as long as they aren’t obnoxiously distracting. I’ll have the producer I work with, Tommy Brown, he’s incredible, play one sound, so it will leave me room to create melodies and then he will come after and produce around it and make it feel epic and stuff.

Nightmares and Lullabies, talk to me about that title because it’s two very different concepts.

Victoria Monet: I like the juxtaposition of the two words because I feel like that’s what my music does. Sonically, there are the beats that are really gritty, tribal and kind of trap and my vocals are a little bit more melodic, whimsical and soft, so I feel like it perfectly describes it. On top of that I have songs that are good songs and songs that are on the sad side, songs that are on the loving side.I feel like the two different moods are good description for the body of work I created.

The project is coming around Halloween, are you a huge Halloween fan?

I wouldn’t say that I’m a huge Halloween fan. It can be somewhat scary and as far as religion, I’m not too overly into it. I kind of just take it like a holiday to dress up, not ho-ish. You know some of these girls go extreme and go half naked. I just take it as a fun holiday, festive, but not to deep into where it’s like “this is the devil,” I’m not into that. But since it’s Nightmares and Lullabies, people would be in the mood for something spooky and dramatic on the musical side.
