You’re very motivating on social media. Do you feel like others in hip-hop need to do more of that?

Rico: I feel like we got our own journeys and those are the things I choose to glorify. You know, I like watches, I have a watch collection; I like cars, I have a car collection; I like clothing and shoes and I’m into fashion. Now I could talk about those things all day. I could post my cars, I could post my watches, my diamonds and my clothes and my fur coats and then…who am I helping? The only thing I’m showing a kid who’s looking up to me is money, money, money, money. But I can tell them something that’ll encourage them. I can use my fame and my notoriety to be helpful and I feel like it’s more effective especially when you’re a part of pop culture.

How has fatherhood affected your approach to music?

Rico: I’m just a dad at home, man. I don’t let it affect the music I create. I don’t censor myself because I feel like the message has to be direct. It has to be true and honest of who I am. But I’m in daddy mode when I’m not working. That’s very important to me.

You gonna put the mic in his hand any time soon?

Rico: [Laughs] If he picks it up on his own, I’ma show him how to do it the right way.

What do you want people to think when they hear Rico Love? What’s the goal?

Rico: The goal is to be Rico Love, bro. When you mention Kanye West, you just know that’s Kanye. You know hes an artist, you know he’s a writer, you know he’s passionate, you know he’s sometimes crazy [laughs]. You think about Puff you think about the executive, the producer, the artist, the mogul. I wanna be so great at what I do that I don’t have to explain who I am. My goal is to be Rico Love, the artist – not the rapper, not the singer, not the producer. Just Rico Love.
