Talk to me about your time at Universal and why it didn’t work out.

Problem: Just like any other rapper, I was chasing the deal because I thought that’s what you had to do. I wouldn’t say it was anything wrong on their end, but it was more so that I didn’t have the knowledge of the game and how to work it. I thank them because that situation proved to me that I could get the deal. Now I’m independent, Diamond Lane Music is the movement, and I’ve never been this successful in my entire life.

What’s some advice for upcoming artists when deciding between signing with a major and going indie?

You gotta do what’s best for you, man. Going indie was the right move for us because of the message we’re trying to convey. We want to be mentioned with the Sony’s, Def Jam’s – all of that. But as far as that goes, you gotta do what’s best for you and not let others judge your success.
