Yasiin Bey

This is bizzare. Despite growing up in Brooklyn, NY and providing incredible entertainment for our country for so long, Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, might be banned from returning to the U.S. since moving to South Africa permanently. The conscious MC was supposed to perform at Boston’s Together Music Festival as a part of his U.S. tour, but just the other day, their website posted the following statement:

We regret to inform you that due to immigration/legal issues Yasiin Bey is unable to enter back into the United States and his upcoming US tour has been canceled.”

It’s unclear exactly what these “immigration/legal” issues actually entail, but if the legendary artist had to go through with canceling a major show, they must be serious. Yasiin has never shied away from speaking on the U.S. government and voicing his displeasure for certain actions they’ve done. In fact, in July of 2013, Bey teamed up with Human Rights organization Reprieve and Bafta to release a mock video of what it’s actually like to be force-fed, in order to shed light on the issues that were occurring at Guantanamo Bay.

Recently, the outspoken entertainer told Rolling StoneI lived in Brooklyn 33 years of my life. I thought I’d be buried in that place. And around seven years ago, I was like, you know, ‘I gotta go, I gotta leave.’ It’s very hard to leave.”

Hopefully Yasiin and U.S. authorities can come to an understanding in the near future. Give us your thoughts on this situation below.
