Nicki Minaj Explains BET Awards Speech, Iggy Azalea Responds
by Staff Editor
This past Sunday (June 29) at the BET Awards was Nicki Minaj‘s night as she dazzled the crowd with a vibrant performance before taking home the award for Best Female Hip Hop artist. During her acceptance speech for the award, Nicki nearly broke the Internet as she stated everything you hear her spit comes directly from her hand and pen.
Making sure the crowd and everybody at home understood where she was coming from Nicki stated, “when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”
The words spoke during the microphone moment echoed across the Internet and believed to be aimed at Iggy Azalea. However, The Pinkprint creator also stated in her speech there was “no shade,” a point that Nicki drove home today on Twitter.
In a series of women empowering tweets, Nicki stated her speech was to provide encouragement for women to write their own rhymes and showing that there was no ill intent aimed toward Iggy. Within the tweets Nicki also acknowledged the work of Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliot.
‘”I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of Fancy, publicly,” Minaj tweeted. “She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud.”
Speaking out for the first time regarding the speech, Iggy crafts a response calling the BET Awards explosion “lame” and sharing a funny P.S. within the caption. Both Nicki Minaj‘s tweets and Iggy Azalea’s Instagram post can be viewed on the pages below.
The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!

I believe we’re smart enough to write down our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do. I’ve been saying this for 5 YEARS

I fell in love with Lauryn Hill b/c I knew she was the author behind those amazingly profound and articulated songs on the MisEducation

I wondered how Lauryn tapped into my brain and wrote an album on love, betrayal, passion, pain, triumph, brokenness…. Did she read minds?

It’s the same reason I have a different level of respect for Missy. I know she’s a writer and a producer. Women MUST aspire for more.

I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of Fancy, publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud.

That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up & coming females to do that.
