It is all about Nas’ Illmatic this week. With the 20th anniversary of the monumental album upon us, the Queens bred rapper has been on a heavy promo-run in between performances. Last week, Nasir Jones sat with Revolt TV Live and delved into how the rap battles between KRS-One and MC Shan influenced Illmatic.
“It’s crazy cause KRS-One is one of the greatest ever, right? And the music wars between BDP and MC Shan was so serious and it was like, KRS-One kind of like helped give birth to me in a lot ways,” Nas admitted as he discussed the iconic Bridge Wars. “Not just MC Shan and Marley Marl but KRS-One [as well] because he silenced everything, that was it. So it was like I had to come out and kind of like represent my ’hood, ’cause other than that, we was done forever.”
Tomorrow Illmatic XX will be released to the masses followed by the in-depth documentary Time Is Illmatic to be released April 16 during the Tribeca Film Festival. Watch the full interview below.
