Is Nike’s Surprise Air Yeezy II “Red October” Release A Strategic Apology?

Nothing says I’m sorry like an unsuspecting drop of Kanye West’s Air Yeezy II “Red October” sneakers. Just in time to celebrate The College Dropout’s 10th anniversary, Nike dropped the highly anticipated kicks for a modest $245 and managed to sell out in 11 minutes.
After being called out for extortion and accused of limiting Kanye West’s genius, the sneaker company has clearly waved the ceremonial white flag. But while the sneaker company and West becoming friendly seems like a win-win for all parties, could Nike be actually flipping the bird to Kanye who is now #TeamAdidas? In the description of the sneakers, there is no head nod or mention of the controversial creative, nor has there been any comment about the shoe’s release from Yeezy. While Ye maintains a no love lost attitude, Nike may be taking this last success as the necessary closure to continue the new year drama- and rant-free.
“I’m still gonna do music, but I really do feel honored to have had the chance to blow Yeezy up with Nike and I really appreciate everything they did for me,” West said. “I’m not knocking them on the way out or burning no bridges, you know, I apologize for my frustration earlier. I just think it’s time. It’s go time. It’s turn up time.”
Whatever the reason was for dropping the highly anticipated kicks, the controversial breakup between Nike and West can finally be put to rest. The question is: can Yeezus and Adidas beat 11 minutes or does Nike get the last laugh?
