TDE artists and Black Hippy Members, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock, have responded to the XXL Cover that billed them as “Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy.”
“Hell yeah,” said Q when asked if he felt the same as Ab-Soul after he took to twitter to express his frustration. “That’s so disrespectful, so disrespectful. But at the same time, you know what I’m saying, we didn’t go into that shoot saying ‘Aw, this is the Kendrick Lamar with Black Hippy photo shoot for the cover.’ Went in there and they said, ‘This is the Black Hippy shoot.’ So we expect a Black Hippy shoot.”
“But, at the end of the day, I always say this to,” ScHoolboy Q continued to say. “Kendrick’s like, he’s way ahead of us. He’s a platinum artist. I haven’t dropped my album yet, you know what I’m saying? Rock’s working on his major label album. Ab-Soul’s working on his major label album. We still haven’t dropped our major label albums. So honestly, at the end of the day, he’s f–king Kendrick Lamar.”
Q went on to compare how artists like Big Sean, J. Cole and Slaughterhouse are often asked about their more veteran peers like Kanye West, Jay Z and Eminem during interviews.
“I mean, this is Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock,” said Jay Rock on the issue. “Stuff like that don’t bother me at the end of the day because real people, they know what it is. They know it’s not Kendrick Lamar and Black Hippy.” –Keith Reid-Cleveland
