Akon said in a recent interview that he’s “very seriously” considering a run for president in 2020.
The 45-year-old known for his hit songs in the mid-2000s has more recently been involved in entrepreneurial endeavors like solar energy and crypto-currency.
He told Newsweek that he feels “a lot more unsafe” in America with Donald Trump as president and that what was accomplished during Barack Obama’s presidency is “being undone.”
“I feel it’s gonna be a fight. I feel like I should be always prepared for the unexpected. I feel very uncomfortable,” he told the outlet.
Earlier this year, Akon announced another one of his projects, Akon Lighting Africa, which aims to provide the continent with electricity through solar energy and he also launched a crypto-currency “ecosystem” called “Akoin.”
His remarks on a potential 2020 run follow rapper Kanye West’s repeated statements that he’s considering running for the presidency in 2024.
“I feel like I want to continue doing what I’m doing and hope that builds me enough momentum,” Akon said.
