Ella Mai sat down with Hot 97 to discuss her newly released self-titled debut album and the controversy between her and Jaquees. As many may know, Jacquees released his cover version of Mai’s “Trip” and gained a lot of momentum from it and was later removed from all platforms by Mai’s label. The controversy sparked quick, with fans assuming that Ella had something to do with it.
“I don’t play any role in it, to be honest. I feel like my label made a statement, and there’s not really much else to say about it to be honest. People are gonna take it how they want,” Ella says. She also adds in that she doesn’t want anyone to assume it was all her doing. “People don’t actually know the real ins and outs of the industry.”
Ella also says she doesn’t mind artist doing covers to her songs because she started her career by doing covers. “No, I don’t mind at all.” She says that it only really becomes an issue when monetization is involved.
After the removal of Jacquees’ remix of “Trip,” it was said that Ella Mai blocked him on Instagram.
“I never even followed him,” she says in response. Catch the full interview below.
