Over the years, Twitter has become everyone’s favorite spot to share their immediate thoughts, feelings, and quick remarks on any and everything going on in the world. Whether it’s pop culture, their daily routines, or some of the biggest events in history, there’s no rules to the social media game. Yesterday, Nicki Minaj tweeted about being snubbed by MTV for her “Anaconda” video in the Video of the Year category. Although it received three other nominations, it didn’t make the biggest award category as many expected. Despite the visuals becoming an Internet meme sensation, triggering celebrity re-enactments, and garnering record-breaking views, the network didn’t see it fit to be nominated for Video of the Year.

While calling out the network, users speculated that Nicki was “throwing shade” at other nominees in the category by saying, “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.” This led to Taylor Swift, who is in the category, along with 8 other nomination, eventually reacting, stating, “I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.”

This remark seemed to be completely unwarranted from T-Swift, as Nicki’s statements were directed towards MTV, and her belief that the network was implying some discrimination against her and her hard work. Taylor’s comments also triggered a much bigger issue, other than her playing the victim role. Whether which video is better or more deserving of the award is no longer the issue. Through Taylor’s tweets, and the media portrayal following, many outlets painted a picture of Nicki as someone attacking Taylor, missing the real point that Nicki was bringing to the forefront. While both women expressed their love for one another in their tension-filled tweets, Nicki was painted as the bad guy in the media.
