Philadelphia’s own Meek Mill pleads guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge resulting in all other charges against him being dropped. These charges were from 2008 when he was convicted on gun and drug charges resulting in eight months in prison and five years probation.

The events that led up to Meek Mill’s sentence of two to four years in prison was an altercation at an airport and popping a wheelie which the Judge somehow saw fit to slap the artist with a severe sentence. The sentencing of Meek Mill by Philadelphia Judge, Genece E. Brinkley became seemingly personal especially after she went against the recommendation of the Assistant District Attorney and his Probation Officer. The guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge came after a Pennsylvania appeals court ruled in July that Meek Mill would be granted a new trial and a new judge.

The support of Meek Mill went beyond just the love from his city, but also celebrities including T.I., Rick Ross, Michael Rubin and Nipsey Hussle have rallied behind him. Following the condemning of Jay-Z , Roc Nation urged fans to sign the Change.org petition addressed to Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf asking the state to reevaluate his sentence.

Additionally,  his highly publicized case sparked a new debate about criminal justice resulting in him becoming the face for reform. In a statement following the plea deal, Meek says “I’ll continue to use my platform to make communities safer and reform our criminal justice system.”

Following a long decade of being on probation, Meek Mill is finally a free man. His lawyer Joe Tacopina said in an interview, “For the first time since he was a teenager, he’s not under probation, he’s not under any supervision. It’s the first time in his adult life that he’ll be able to go somewhere without asking permission.” Ate age 32, this is the first time since he was 18 that Meek Mill is a free man without the burden of a case over his head.
