Lil Nas X‘s viral hit song “Old Town Road” has become an instant hit, but it won’t be seen on any of Billboard’s country charts.
Rolling Stone has reported that Billboard removed the song from its Hot Country Songs list one week after the track debuted at No. 19. The music mag has informed his label, Columbia Records about the removal, stating it’s place on the chart was a mistake, not embracing “enough elements of today’s country music.”
In a statement explaining the removal of “Old Town Road”, Billboard says the song doesn’t “embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.” The magazine also stated that their decision to take off the song is not race-related.
“Old Town Road” has been receiving huge notoriety after Lil Nas X dropped it’s “Red Dead Redemption”-themed video, with the content and it’s country flavor becoming a viral hit. Now, the song continues to sit at No. 32 on the Hot 100 charts.
