Since it’s start, Cash Money has been responsible for nurturing the careers of prominent artists such as Mannie Fresh , Lil Wayne , Nicki Minaj, and Drake.
Forbes dives deep behind the label to understand Birdman and his brother Slim’s start in the industry.
“Their ability to recognize talented artists from the earliest stages and help guide them into superstar status remains unparalleled…very rarely in our business have we seen music executives make a cultural impact of this magnitude.” – Monte Lipman, Chief Officer of Universal’s Republic Records
Birdman and Slim founded Cash Money in their hometown of New Orleans to serve as a home for hip-hop and bounce music. Early recruits for the label included producer Mannie Fresh, rapper Pimp Daddy, and the then 11-year-old wordsmith, Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne helped place Cash Money on the hip-hop map with his single Bling-bling. The song became so popular that the term “bling-bling” has been added to the dictionary.
