Next month Travis Scott is set to join Maroon 5 and Big Boi as this year’s act for the Super Bowl half-time show in Atlanta. The decision to perform has raised controversy, especially after many artists have declined the opportunity do the show.

Variety reported that Scott agreed to perform, he spoke to Colin Kaepernick, the former San Fracisco 49ers player whose exile from the league is the center of people’s beef with the NFL. According to them, Scott and Kaepernick had “at least one phone conversation before the rapper confirmed his Super Bowl appearance.” It was also said that “while the two did not necessarily agree,” they ended the call with “mutual respect and understanding.”

However, Colin Kaepernick denied ever having a phone conversation with the auto tune rapper. The football player also made a series of retweets obviously pointing out that he did not approve of Scott performing at the Super Bowl during their conversation. The football player retweeted a tweet from Beats 1 DJ Ebro in which stated “Kap did not approve this bullshit! Get the fuck outta here….” as well as radio host Nessa tweeting, “There is NO mutual respect and there is NO understanding for anyone working against @Kaepernick7 PERIOD.”

In the run-up to the Super Bowl on February 4, thousands of people have signed a Change.org petition to urge Maroon 5, Scott and Big Boi to take a knee in solidarity with Kaepernick. Maybe they’ll change their mind in the next few weeks and protest with good cause too.
