On the eve of her 28th birthday (Dec. 21), JoJo announced in a series of mysterious Instagram and Twitter posts clips of her debut, self-titled album JoJo and sophomore follow-up The High Road but with completely new vocals and production. Before being released from an illegal contract she had with now-defunct Blackground Records (home to muddled deals with Aaliyah and Toni Braxton) JoJo was at the mercy of releasing music for free via Soundcloud and other leaking methods because she essentially didn’t own the rights to her own voice. In 2011, they even called a truce and agreed to work together for new music but scrapped her album after single ‘Disaster’ and ‘Demonstrate’ in 2012.

Her debut album was released in 2004 and following her legal win with the label and subsequent signing with Atlantic, Blackground quietly scrubbed the internet of her two albums and singles ‘Demonstrate’ and ‘Disaster’ released with the label.

“My former label removed my music, I, unfortunately, have absolutely no control over what they do or don’t do,” she also explained in 2017 as to why the album isn’t available on streaming services. “I want to let bygones be bygones. I pray one day they put my music back up.”

Instead of waiting for that to happen, it seems JoJo found a loophole. In the ultimate FU to her former label, the re-releases feature new interpolations and a somewhat stripped version of the production of the original tracks, completely remastered. Check out the music below (available for the first time on all platforms) and let us know what you think of the new sound and take on the music. Here’s to reclaiming your damn time.
