According to the Detroit news, Aretha Franklin’s Detroit mansion has been sold. The brick-statured home by the Detroit golf-club sold for $300,000. Franklin purchased the 5,600 square-foot home in 1993. Her estate stated that the mansion was the last property Franklin owned in Detroit.

Aretha Franklin, born March 25th 1942, was an American singer, songwriter, actress, pianist, and civil rights activist. At the age of 18, she embarked on a music career as a recording artist. Her career did not immediately flourish, but by the end of the 1960s, she had come to be known as the “Queen of Soul”.

On August 13th 2018, Franklin was reported to be gravely ill at her home in Detroit. She was under hospice care at the time as she was battling pancreatic cancer, and had done so for a while. Stevie Wonder, Jesse Jackson and ex-husband Glynn Turman visited her on her deathbed. She passed away on the 16th August at the age of 76.

Rather unusually, considering her long battle with pancreatic cancer, Franklin died not leaving behind a will. This meant that her four sons had to figure out how to handle her assets, including her Detroit mansion.
Franklins owns one more property by the Detroit area as well. The 4,148 square-foot home in Bloomfield Township is currently up for sale, starting at $800,000.

When somebody dies without a will, their assets are often sold and the money split between their closest members of the family (in Franklin’s case, her sons). When a property is involved, a property valuation for deceased estate purposes should be undertaken so it is clear how much the property should be sold for.
