Jaden Smith has had quite the summer, surprising fans with remixes with Will Smith, dropping the Electric edition of his latest album SYRE and prepping it’s follow up ERYS. Today Jaden gives us a first look at what’s to come with “BACK ON MY SH*T,” taken from the Skate Kitchen soundtrack, as Zane Lowe’s World Record on Apple Music’s Beats 1. On the show he says he’s “transitioning into more rap.” He also discusses working with Young Thug, as well as his father’s 50th birthday (Today 9/25).

Listen to the new track and the transcript from the interview below.

Jaden Smith on Song

Jaden: The song’s completely inspired by the movie Skate Kitchen that just came out. It’s about a female crew of skaters in New York City who are trying to find themselves, but they realize that their crew is the only thing that really helps them go through the city and feel like they are a part of something.

Zane: How is your skate game going on right now are you still you still riding?

Jaden: Yeah I’m still riding, but all of the girls can skate better than me.

Jaden Smith on ERYS

Jaden: I like to do it all. I like to experiment and stuff but at the end of the day, the people have spoken on what they like from me so I try to come really really hard. I’m just tryna lead up until ERYS. You know so that people can kind of start to slowly make that transition with me into the more rap world. ERYS is going to be just extremely hard. Just every song, back to back, high tempo, a lot of bass like just crazy.

Zane: Who have you been able to give in. What can you give us give us some insight as to how that’s shaping up?

Jaden: So so far I’ve only been able to get in with Thug and Rocky. I mean I’ve been able to get in with people you know from my crew like Harry, like Mateo, Willow, Tyler.

Zane: How’s the Rocky record coming together?

Jaden: Oh man it’s crazy. It’s like amazing. Like awesome. I don’t want to give too much away. We’re working on something and trying to shoot some stuff so you know I want everybody to see it and hear it at the same time.

Jaden Smith on Will’s 50th Bday

Jaden: He is bungee jumping out of a helicopter over the Grand Canyon.

Zane: Now that he officially turns 50, does the checklist now come to a natural conclusion or has he got the addiction to this stuff?

Jaden: No no. I think the checklist has just started now that he turned 50. It’s only been the past few months that he’s started the checklist thing.

Jaden Smith On the world being open to experimental fashion and thoughts now

Jaden: That’s what I love about everything that’s happening in the world right now and that’s why it’s just so exciting to be alive right now, to be in this world, because we’re living in a time when we can really just get on our phones or jump in front of a camera and begin to influence people in a positive way. And that’s really what I want to do. I really want to just continue pushing the masses, inspiring people to be like ‘hey you can do whatever you want to do.’ If you want to wear this, or you want to wear that. And if they say that you can’t, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to think they’re cool. Even if everybody says you’re not cool. That’s what it’s all about.

Jaden Smith On Young Thug

Jaden: Thug is amazing. He’s such an individual and he just pushes boundaries and that’s why I always knew that we were destined to do something together. I feel like we kind of saw each other from afar through the Internet and I knew that we we had a lot in common. I feel like we have a lot of common in the studio too. He’s really inspiring me just flow wise for this next album and cadence wise, just the way he raps and the way he does it. I just I love being around and being in the studio. I was in the studio with him last night. We were just messing around with some song in me and we got like three other songs that are not hard songs, they’re really like chill calm songs. But yeah we’re in the studio all the time making stuff. It’s exciting.
