Back at it again with new Civil Selects, as summer comes to a close, we debut four rising rappers Alabama, Cali, New York and Texas. Check out these new sounds and find out why we think they’re dope. Get into the sounds below and add our official Civil Selects: August Playlist to stay up on all the new artists we highlight.
Artist: TNT Tez
Track: Coca Cola
Hot Take: The Birmingham, Alabama rapper has had a steady rise over the last year, initially bursting on our radars with a diss record with fellow Birmingham native YBN Nahmir. Coca Cola is the watch your mouth track of the summer, recently debuting on Issa Rae’s HBO series ‘Insecure’.
Artist: Caleon Fox
Track: Max Mode
Hot Take: Actor/Comedian/Musician Caleon Fox take his Cali stylings full throttle on ‘Max Mode’ lifted from his first EP ‘If You Only Knew’. The viral sensation has started to make a name for himself with his light-hearted take on music marrying his lyricism with effervescent beats and melodies.
Artist: Tobe Nwigwe
Track: I’m Dope (ft. David Michael Wyatt)
Hot Take: A former D-1 linebacker, the gravelly voiced rapper was told he was dope by Erykah Badu and Dave Chappelle, so he made a song about it. The Houston native even samples Coming To America’s meta SoulGlo commercial on the track. Nwigwe is definitely one to watch.
Artist: Two32
Track: Get At Me
Hot Take: The somewhat hidden gem Two32, hailing from Queens, melodically flows over ‘Get At Me’ where the lyrics are as straightforward as the title. Lifted from his EP ’00bfff (Deep Sky Blue)’ based off hex color palates, his previous project ‘F88e8 (Sweet Pink)’ shares similar vibrant themes.
