According to the Detroit Free Press, Eminem is in a legal battle with a Detroit fashion designer and store owner over the rights to the “313” trademark. Trademarks are crucial for brand success and can be used on anything from cars to Personalized cocktail napkins to promote it, which is why Eminem is stepping in.

Entrepreneur and designer Clement Brown has legally held the trademark for his Three Thirteen brand. His clothing line is sold in a store in Detroit with other local brands.

However, Eminem’s brand is “E13,” with the “E” flipped around to resemble a three. Em’s clothing line launched back in November of 2016. His brand was sold out of Carhartt’s flagship Detroit store and then her later released a special edition Air Jordan with Nike.

Detroit Free Press said that the rapper’s team applied for a trademark in June 2017, and Brown’s Three Thirteen Licensing, LLC filed a notice of opposition in response, which blocked Em from getting the trademark.

In response to the battle, Brown gave a statement.

“I respect Eminem and his position in hip-hop. As culture creators, it’s necessary for us to protect our intellectual property. … It’s imperative that we have rights when it comes to our ideas. It’s imperative that we have ownership of our creations.”
