According to Fader, JAY-Z published an open letter in The Philly Inquirer after the City of Philadelphia announced that the rappers music and arts festival, Made In America, would move in 2019 from The Parkway, after being held there since 2012.
In the letter JAY-Z denounces the decision and blames the office of Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney for the festival being moved.
“The location is integral to the pulse of the festival. The Parkway is a cultural arts center that is symbolic to over 600 artists that have performed at this event.”
The letter also says that JAY-Z learned about the festival being moved through the media. The City says they have no intentions on completely getting rid of the annual event, but in JAY-Z’s letter, the City told a different story.
JAY-Z writes, “In fact, this administration immediately greeted us with a legal letter trying to stop the 2018 event.”
The rapper included the financial importance of the event for the city, stating, “a positive $102.8 million economic impact to Philadelphia… $3.4 million in rent to the City… 1000 Philadelphians [employed] each day [of the festival].”
He even mentions that $2.9 million of revenue is donated to United Way of Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.
The rapper then asks, “How does an administration, merely discard an event that generates millions in income and employs the city’s people as if we are disposable now that we have served our purpose?”
Made In America 2018 Festival is set to take place September 1-2. Further options for locations for next years festival will be determined internally and handled accordingly.
