The Fourth of The July has a rather mixed acceptance for a lot of people in this country, but if there’s anything to celebrate it’s coming together in the support of others. In fact, Atlanta rap legend Jeezy knows just that, teaming up with only the second Black Woman mayor of Atlanta Keisha Lance Bottoms for the annual 4th of July AJC Peachtree Road Race. Standing as the largest 10K on the planet, the gathering sees thousands participate in an effort to donate close $1 million to select charities in Atlanta, including Jeezy’s own Street Dreamz Foundation, Atlanta’s Youth Scholarship Program, and the Atlanta Track Club’s Kilometer Kids.

“(Mayor Bottoms is) a great a friend of mine,” Jeezy said of the partnership. “Anything I can do to support the city of Atlanta (and) support her cause, I’m always down. I’m always a phone call away if she needs me.”

The Peachtree was the rapper’s first 10K, but a recent devotion to distance running provided a solid foundation for the road race. In a pre-race interview with GQ, Jeezy broke down his fairly recent dedication to the fit life and outlined the changes he’s made in his personal diet that ultimately helped him lose 60 pounds. “The crazy thing was (with) so much motivation going around it didn’t feel like it was really a race,” he said. “I love the people that were on the side of the road with their signs and giving away watermelon and beer. Welcome to Atlanta.”
