The Universal Music Group team used the setting of SXSW to show their future is bright with their “Music is Universal” showcase. Taking over Antone’s in Austin, Texas, their showcase on Friday night featured Dreezy, Denzel Curry, Lil Yachty and Metro Boomin’.
In front of a packed crowd of SXSW attendees, each of the four rising stars received time to share with the crowd what UMG to them. The show kicked off with Dreezy, who took the stage with DJ Hoop Dreams and a duo of dancers and rocked the crowd with her scene-stealing “Chiraq (Remix)” and a host of stand-out singles from her impressive debut album No Hard Feelings.
The show shifted to Carol City’s Denzel Curry whose amazing energy and stage presence was enough to invigorate any crowd. During this time on stage, he took fans on a ride through favorites like “ULT” and made sure he went to, what he called, a different level of Super Saiyan, a nod to Dragon Ball Z and his high energy style.
With the crowd primed for what else would come, DJ Oreo set the scene for Lil Yachty who emerged in a white and black Chicago Cubs hoodie and many of his Quality Control friends for a speaker banging set. One for the party, Yachty challenged the crowd to match the energy of the set as he ran through singles from his Lil Boat effort and his most popular single on D.R.A.M.’s “Broccoli.”
After three sets the crowd was still ready for more but who knows if they were ready for the impact that comes from Metro Boomin’. With a slew of bangers in his discography, the St. Louis native took the stage for a closing set that was perfect for putting on display with the label has to offer.
