The first panel of the day was “The Music Generation Gap Debate,” which was monorated by radio personality, Angie Martinez. The Voice of New York chopped it up with hip-hop legends like Scarface, Pete Rock, Producer DJ Mustard, and East Coast’s emcees French Montana, and Raekwon, alongside with LBC native Vince Staples.

The long time radio personality kicked off the panel by asking how much of a responsibility the newer acts had to recognize the history of their genre. Pete Rock mentioned that it served as a marker of respect for those who paved the way, while Raekwon felt that music is less about a lineage and more about finding what inspires a specific artist.

Vince Staples then questioned why when rappers are asked to pay homage the artist is always an East Coast emcee and rarely someone from the West Coast as he said, “They don’t ever say people where I’m from.”

Scarface weighted in as well expressing his feelings on what he feels is a watered down hip-hop industry. “The doors for great sh*t is closed now,” he mentioned. While the young “Summertime ’09” rapper said that acts like Kendrick Lamar are still pushing the music and culture forward while also going platinum.
