A little past noon and the next up after “The Future of Our Schools” panel came “Achieving Longevity In the Game,” which was monitored by Complex Editor-in-Chief, Noah Callahan-Bever.

West Coast legend Ice Cube, and professional skateboarder Tony Hawk spoke about how to stay successful in the ever-changing business. Not only did both of them drop gems but they shared how similar their career paths have been along the years.

Cube said in regards to learning early that he had to look out for himself in the music business, “Where I come from, the worst thing you can do is go into a game you don’t know how to play.” He then described his time with N.W.A., as he was writing Eazy-E’s rhymes and Eazy was the one cashing the checks.

Ice Cube mentioned that his transition from making hip-hop music to making movies. He not only found it beneficial but also gave him the skills and confidence to continue working in film industry, which have lead him to movies like Friday, Ride Along, and many more.

Tony Hawk also recalled a moment when he was 17 and on the rise but unaware of how the industry worked. Back then he would sign off on pretty much everything that crossed his path, until he realized he was an “entity and a way to make money” for others. Where he reached the breaking point of having a company put his name on toilet paper. He went to say that he eventually got out of the contract and made a concerted effort to protect his personal brand.
