Genius continues to roll out their VERIFIED video series. In the past they’ve had Mac Miller, Young M.A, and 21 Savage, but today, Chicago’s own Common breaks down his track “Black America Again,” a poignant statement against systemic racism in the U.S.

The Hip-Hop veteran discusses working with Stevie Wonder, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Black Lives Matter and how at one point Maria Sharapova was making more money than Serena Williams.

I started embracing that we are Americans, black Americans—understanding that we are part of this country, we helped build this country, we are citizens and part of the fabric of this country, so the only way that the country will see equality and justice is by giving it to black people too,” Common tells Genius.

We’re not sitting back just being like okay these are the issues, for me this song is a call to action.”
