Lyor Cohen Leaves 300 Entertainment To Become YouTube’s Global Head Of Music
by Staff Editor
In a somewhat shocking report, it appears that music mogul Lyor Cohen is leaving the label he helped start to become the Global Head of Music for leading video-sharing site YouTube.
In a statement by Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s chief business officer, it’s evident that Lyor’s role with YouTube is to help soften the bitter relationship between the video site and the competitive music industry. “Lyor is a lion of the music industry,” Mr. Kyncl said. “As we enter the growth era of the music industry, Lyor is in a position to make tremendous difference in accelerating that growth in a fair way for everyone.”
With this move, Lyor will be departing from 300 Entertainment, the label he founded and currently serves as CEO for. He’ll remain in position until December before taking the throne at YouTube. It should also be mentioned that Google, YouTube’s parent company, was one of the first investors in 300 Ent., making this move not all that odd.
That being said, it is strange to see Lyor leave behind his label just a few years after launching it. I’m sure we’ll hear from Lyor sooner than later as far as why he’s making the move.
