Civil Interview: Brianna Perry Talks Impact Of ‘Sisterhood Of Hip Hop’ And More
by Staff Editor
You attended the Black Banks Matter event in Miami last month. What were some enlightening things you took away from that?
Brianna Perry: I was just blown away by how many people came out to that event. It’s the largest black owned bank in the States. I didn’t even know about that bank. While I was there, I got a lot of information about the bank and opened up an account. I felt like I was just enriching where I’m from by being part of that and seeing people come out to be part of the movement. Big Mike was there and spoke so well. We saw Ace Hood come out. I hear that they’re doing that movement in Houston and Atlanta, so to be part of the Miami edition was amazing.
How do you feel about artists using their platform to speak on these issues? Do you feel that it’s their duty to speak on important topics, or only should if they care about it?
Brianna Perry: I feel like if it’s genuine they should. If you genuinely feel for a cause or want to help the situation, than by all means do. We have this platform and this voice. Nowadays with social media, everyone has a voice. I just encourage everyone, whether you’re an artist and celebrity, or a school teacher, to use your voice for what you believe in.
One amazing part of your story that makes you unique is that the show displays you getting your degree and finishing college. How has that advanced your career?
Brianna Perry: You have to practice so much discipline and sacrifice. Being done with school still means that you have to continue being disciplined. You have to sacrifice in order to get what you want. That taught me a big lesson. It was something that I really wanted to do. It was not easy at all. I put my mind to it, and I was able to accomplish that. When it comes to music or acting, if I work hard enough, whatever the obstacle may be, I can make this happen because I’ve done it in school. It inspired me and was something I wanted to do myself. I hope it makes me a better businesswoman and learn to network with people from different areas and cultures. It will definitely make me a better and smarter artist today.
Who has been your favorite person to work with so far?
Brianna Perry: I’ve been blessed to work with so many talented artists and producers. Future is a hard worker. He’s dope. I loved working with Missy Elliott. There’s Trina. Anyone I’ve worked with, I feel like I’ve had a great experience. I’ve been blessed that way. I appreciate my work with all of them.
Is there anyone on your bucket list for a collaboration?
Brianna Perry: I would love to collaborate with J. Cole. He’s so raw and real. I think it would be a dope record.
