DMK

What are some of your biggest accomplishments so far?

Kourtney: The first major one was when we did Apollo. That was huge. It was our freshman year of high school. Then I would say doing a play we did called “Church Girl.” It’s on Netflix. It was on Redbox too. It plays on Centric and BET. We actually got a chance to tour with the play. That was pretty dope, it was our first tour and we got to see how tours really work.

You all our finalists to be on Empire. How did you hear about it?

Melanee: For me, my cousin tagged me in it on Facebook.

Damoli: A couple of people were telling us like “y’all should do this!” and we were like I don’t know about that.

Melanee: Initially we were like maybe? But our parents were like every opportunity is a good opportunity what do you have to lose?

Kourtney: Of course there was a bus that came to every city. It came to Detroit but we couldn’t get on the bus cause you either had to be one or two people. For groups of three or more we had to submit a video. The judges went to 15 different cities and over 6,000 people entered the contest, and we were in the top ten.

After the top ten, what is the next step?

Kourtney: They will buckle it down to four, then down to one. You have to submit a casting video of you acting and that’s how they will pick who they want the people to be from the video.

What are the key lessons that you have learned so far?

Melanee: It’s a lot of stuff we have learned in twelve years. I think the biggest thing we learned from her granddad was that no one is bigger than the group, first and foremost. The day that you think you are bigger than the group is the day that groups start falling apart. You can’t let who you think you are inside of the group or what the fans think you are affect the magic of the group. We realize that this wouldn’t work without the three of us. Realistically, nobody can replace me, nobody can replace Kourtney, nobody can replace Melanie. That’s the biggest lesson we have learned so far. I don’t know if we going to learn anything bigger than that.

Kourtney: And to be hungry because you will have people working for you but you have to be the one going out and getting it. Nobody is going to want your dream more than you do. God didn’t give anyone else your vision. You know what you want it to look like, you know what you want it to be and you have to stay true to that.

Aside from the potential of being on Empire, what else do you have in the works?

Melanee: We have a new video and we will release some songs, once we stop being picky and narrow those down. Before the year is over we will release an official EP.

Damoli: Work on another video.

Melanee: Yes, after this video is another with our official single that we will push to radio, so that’s coming up too.

Damoli: Hopefully we will be on someone’s tour this summer and Empire too, if they pick us.
