Civil Scope: Kari Faux

How did your relationship with Childish Gambino come about?
Childish Gambino’s manager came across Black Party’s SoundCloud, and then on Twitter. And after listening to a few songs on Flint’s mixtape Prototype, he flew out to Arkansas, we got together and started to work on “No Small Talk.” It was honestly an innocent, arbitrary gesture, and it just happened to work.
As a newcomer to the game, what are key lessons you’re learning early on?
I’m definitely a newcomer in the game, and one of the lessons I’ve learned thus far is to always believe and trust in yourself. Trust what you know, and what’s good for you, because people are definitely going to try to do things that are going to work for them, and not necessarily you. So I’ve learned to always do what I want to do, and believe in my craft.
What are your goals for 2016?
I really want to make good shows, and I want to connect with more people. I want to continue to build a strong fan base, and have my new and old fans appreciate and follow the decisions I make with my music and career.
Do you have any shows coming up we should know about?
Yea, I’m doing a few shows in Austin, Texas for South by Southwest (SXSW), one on March the 16, and another one of the 17. I also have several other things in the process, but they’re not set on stone yet. I’m basically just focusing on Lost En Los Angeles until it’s out.
Last words?
I’m hot, I’m black, and I control the culture.
