Op-Ed: Rihanna & Drake’s ‘Work’ Solidifies Their Dynamic Duo Status

In 2010, the two got together for their first collaboration on Rihanna’s Loud album titled “What’s My Name?”. This was a little over a year from when Chris Brown was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community service over the physical altercation with the pop star.
At the time, rumors started to fly of Drake and Rihanna’s alleged relationship, and while all signs pointed to it at one point, it was never confirmed. What’s one way to get the hip-hop world riled up after that? Release the hottest relationship anthem of the year together, and that’s exactly what their aforementioned collab did.
The red-haired singer and Champagne Papi join forces again for the title track to Drake’s Take Care album about a year later. The classic tune was almost a personal and relatable message from Drake to Rihanna in light of her reconciliation with Chris Brown at the time, which many people were against.
“Take Care” became one of Drizzy’s biggest hits at the time. The OVO general prides himself on being transparent in his music, so when it was time to tell his tale of complicated romance, he called on the bad girl for some more comparable history. Never one to back away from a challenge, Rihanna threw her heart into the chorus with some of her best vocals and honesty that made “Take Care” a standout in both her and Drake’s catalogs.
Fast-forward to 2016, and the two gave us, once again, another plot twist with Rih’s latest single “Work.” The song shares quick-paced pop-reggae vibe with a heavy digital beat, as Rihanna delivers some slightly auto tuned vocals, with Drake’s Midas touch.
A perfect three for three, we can only assume Rihanna and Drake have more hits in the vault. Before “Work,” it had been roughly five years since we heard the duo together. Let’s hope they don’t make us wait another five years for the next one. – Lupe Looove
