The soulful Melanie Fiona is using her music to tackle human rights issues. For her latest effort, “I Tried,” the R&B songstress brings the track’s hair-raising emotions to life in an accompanying visual.

Bruised and battered, Fiona is seen trapped inside a glass box crying for help while news clips, from Mike Brown to Sandra Bland, flash before her eyes. As the headlines are projected onto the glass, Fiona is overwhelmed by their truth.

“It is important for me to channel the ideas and concepts I am passionate about into my music and my art,” the “Bite the Bullet” singer said in a recent interview with Complex. “As an artist with a social platform, I feel it is my responsibility to do so.”

“The video for ‘I Tried’ is a tribute to the fight in which we all witness and experience both internally and externally in the world daily. The conversation of important issues should not end when we turn the TV off. I hope this visual sparks emotion, thought, dialogue, reflection, and ultimately, positive change.”

The song, produced by Andre “Dre” Harris, is set to appear on Melanie’s third album Awake, due in early 2016. Check out the video below.
