Straight Outta Compton

Given N.W.A.’s huge impact on hip-hop culture, specifically the black culture, why do you think it took so long for it to be a full blown movie?

ICE CUBE: I think it takes a lot of courage for a studio to do a movie like this, for a lot of different reasons. Not only is N.W.A. a controversial group, to shoot a movie on this level they had to spend more money than they normally would on a movie like this, taking a big risk, we’re using mostly all unknown actors so there’s no guarantee that you’re going to have people come to the movie. Their taking chance after chance and risk after risk. You have to have a lot of courage to stand up to all those obstacles.

The casting in the movie was amazing. Did you or Dre have any specific tactics that you used to prepare the actors in any way?

ICE CUBE: Just making sure they had the flavor of us. Not just the look but the flavor. A lot of guys did speech classes to learn how to talk like Eazy and talk like Dre. The actors were going the extra mile. We were going the extra mile. We did whatever we could to make them a real group and not just 5 actors pretending to be a group. We made them record the whole album over, we made them rehearse the shows and we would rehearse. We did everything we could to get them together. They feel like brothers now to be honest.

How was it having your actual son play your character ?

ICE CUBE: Unreal. It just was. It was like a dream come true. I’m so happy for him, for my family, and for everything it’s going to do for his career. This is kind of like what you want to do when you’re in the position I’m in. He has his own talent which is great and glad that he’s just able to have a vehicle to show it.

How involved were you and Dre in writing the actual script?

ICE CUBE: We were in it to win it. You know, changing stuff, getting the dialogue right, making sure that everything was authentic so we were in the trenches the whole movie.

We’ve heard a lot about Eminem joining NWA for a reunion tour. Can you speak on that project and if so, how do you think fans will react?

ICE CUBE: [laughs] It’s just a rumor right now. It’s really up to Dr. Dre and what he wants to do. If he wants to make it happen, he’s going to make it happen. It’s just a rumor.

NWA is no stranger to diss tracks and rap beef. How do you think NWAs rap beefs and diss tracks compare to today’s?

ICE CUBE: I don’t know, I’m a fan of Kool Moe Dee and LL. I’m back and forth but they’ve got a long way to live up to, to be considered classic diss records they’ve got a long way to go.
