Civil Court: Did Dr. Dre’s ‘Compton’ Album Make Up For ‘Detox’ Never Releasing?

LINDSEY: Over the last decade, Dr. Dre has calibrated some of the highest demand out of any hip-hop pioneer in the game, with fans begging for new music more and more each year. The rap community rejoiced this past week, as he finally released a full, brand new album, Compton, and it’s everything that a West Coast listener, and hip-hop appreciator, could want and more. Even though it’s tiding the fans over, something about it still doesn’t satisfy that long-term hunger that has been lingering for the past decade. Enter Detox.
Detox was probably the most anticipated album in hip-hop the last decade or so, and it got to the point where fans were convinced it was a myth. While Dre recently admitted that it will never see the light of day in the music public, it’s pretty unsettling to know that it will forever remain a mystery. You see, Compton might be a Dre album that we all wanted, but it isn’t the project that we have all been running through our minds, figuring out the possible features, sound articulation, craftsmanship, etc. With some impeccable verses from Kendrick Lamar, Snoop, and more, Compton is the perfect soundtrack for the West Coast, and the ultimate proof that Dr. Dre has grown into his legendary status, but it’s not complete to his musical story. Although he was not satisfied with the result of Detox, it’s still an unreachable itch on the backs of hip-hop listeners, and we won’t ever be able to make it go away, no matter how much we’re distracted by other areas that are being scratched.
Yes, Compton may take over our taste buds (or ear buds), but it’ll still leave avid, longtime hip-hop fans with a bland after-taste. What is Detox holding? What does the most anticipated hip-hop album really sound like? Would it have lived up to the hype? It’s almost a real pain in hearts around the nation to know that those questions will never be answered, no matter how much our ears are happy.
