Fetty Wap provided more clues about his musical background in an interview with Power 105.1’s Angie Martinez yesterday (July 17).

The New Jersey rapper makes it clear that his wailing delivery doesn’t have much in common with the rest of MCs in Jersey or New York. But why? Fetty shares with Angie that he spent his summers in the South with his relatives.

Things get more interesting in the interview. Martinez asked Wap, “You’re not a hip-hop fan?” Fetty replied, “Nah, some people criticize me for that…most of my family is from the south. My cousins and them all listen to Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, trap music, Lil Boosie, Slim Thug, they listen to people like that—Project Pat, Three Six Mafia, Juicy J. I didn’t listen to no up-north rappers… My cousins up here, on the other hand, they listen to Jay Z… Nas, but if you ask me to recite ‘em, I can’t recite ‘em.”

Fetty Wap is one of the many new artists who lack of interest in their genre’s history. Remember when we shared Young Thug told GQ he wouldn’t buy a Jay Z album, because of his age?

Angie also touched on the subject of his new found fame, “I would imagine one of the coolest things when you become a celebrity, is some of the people you meet. But I guess to you, you’re like whatever, you’re not really pressed.” Fetty replied, “I mean because they’re already famous…I don’t like hanging with famous people. It makes me feel a little uncomfortable, because I still feel regular.”

Check out the interview on the next page as The ‘Trap Queen’ hitmaker talks about new found fame, meeting Rihanna, being comfortable on stage, still feeling like a “regular person”, his eye, not being a “hip-Hop” head, being a fan of South music like Gucci Mane, Three 6 Mafia and Young Jeezy, and more.
