Civil Interview: Ginuwine Talks ‘Chocolate City,’ Aaliyah’s Legacy & Wanting To Work With Missy Elliott Again
by Staff Editor
When people think of you in music, they also associate you with Aaliyah and her legacy. Did you have any thoughts on the biopic that Lifetime aired last year?
Ginuwine: I haven’t even watched it! I heard so many bad reviews. I wasn’t portrayed in there, so I just really didn’t watch it.
How would you want to see Aaliyah immortalized?
Ginuwine: I would want someone that really knew her to actually do the movie, because there are elements and parts to it that people never got to see with her and me, and her and Static [Major]. There was a lot of ground work in the beginning with her struggle, leading her to take a lot of time off because of the situation with R. Kelly and all that. It would have to be somebody that truly knows her life, and knew the struggle of how to make it in the music industry. Her family was beautiful, and knew just how much of a beautiful spirit she was. They knew of how giving, motivated, and smart she was.
Missy Elliott is said to be working on a brand new album. Do you guys have any plans to reunite and work together?
Ginuwine: I truly hope so! I definitely want her on my material. Missy’s doing her thing, and she’s doing things for Katy Perry and a lot of other people [laughs]. Hopefully I’ll be able to get on something with her. If not, I’m always going to support her. She’s always supported me. Anything I’ve needed, she’s there front and center. Hopefully I will get to do that. But I’m definitely going to call her when it’s time for me to get in the studio.
What’s going on with your solo work?
Ginuwine: You know, because of all of the music that’s out right now, with so many artists, you have to really put out something that is going to take off as soon as you do it. You can’t take no chances. I just want to make sure that when I do it, I come correct. Right now, I’m just listening to a lot of music. I just met with Timbaland, and I gotta find a direction that I’m going. It’s been awhile since I’ve come out with a solo project. I did TGT, but that was a group thing. I just want to come out strong. I want to come out with a song that moves the world and made a statement. That’s where I’m trying to go and figure it out. I can’t count on me being Ginuwine, and the fans will support it. It’s not like that anymore. I really have to come with something crazy, because no one is selling records anymore. I’m looking forward to getting in the studio and just creating. Hopefully at the end of the year, beginning of next year, or sometime in 2016, I’ll be releasing Same Ol’ G. I’m definitely naming it Same Ol’ G.
