Civil Interview: Jazmine Sullivan Discusses Her Essence Festival Performance, Baltimore And Brandy Duet
by Staff Editor
What’s to come with you and Brandy’s duet?
Jazmine: First of all I love Brandy. It’s an honor that she wants to do anything with me. We actually haven’t started talking about it yet, since she has a busy schedule being on Broadway in Chicago now, and I just got finished with my tour.
You recently did a powerful rendition of Nina Simone’s “Baltimore.” What inspired you to cover that song?
Jazmine: I was actually asked to do that song for the documentary that they’re doing. I actually didn’t even hear that song, and didn’t know much about it, so I had to learn it on the spot. Nina just had so much passion in her voice. When recording it, I was only thinking about matching her passion. It’s just so weird that it’s so timely with what’s going on. It’s really crazy that it all kind of comes together.
Do you have your own specific thoughts on what’s going on in Baltimore right now?
Jazmine: First of all, I’m happy that the police authorities involved are being charged. It’s not often that we actually get to that point. I hope we can see what’s next, and Baltimore can kind of rebuild itself. I hope we can get that together so that it doesn’t happen again.
