Explain what your vision of who The Husel is in your own words, since some have been making their own assumptions.

The Husel: It’s hard to explain because it’s in development as we speak. The Husel is, a representation of what’s now, in the urban world that is. It’s a hodge-podge of a lot of things I’ve been inspired by through the years. Moving down to Atlanta, and moving around in general, it’s about what people are inspired by. That’s what we as artists do. We repurpose inspiration, and consistently imitate to what’s going on right now. That’s what I hope to accomplish. When I go to the club or turn on the radio, these are the sounds that I hear as a musician, a songwriter/producer, and just an overall lover of music. As a lover of music, I feel like I should make music according to what people are listening to.

Why is right now the right time to pursue The Husel’s career?

The Husel: I spent 15 years doing things according to what other people believe I should do and how I should go about presenting my artistry. Don’t get me wrong, I won from it and benefitted from it in a lot of ways, however I still ended up being creatively frustrated I wasn’t being my full self. I started realizing that there are a whole lot of layers to me. There was no way I could funnel all of these things down one lane because it would’ve been compromising to the brand that I already presented myself as. Instead of doing that, why not just start as a whole new brand and treat it like I’m a whole new artist. I wanted this sound to be a valid contributor to what the youth have as their own thing. I don’t want to force feed them what happened 10, 15, or 20 years ago. I want to give them what they did and what they’re doing, and this is the sound that the youth is diggin’. That’s the demographic that I want to entertain.

What about your other brand while you’re pursuing The Husel?

The Husel: Well, if the youth is also digging my other brand, that’s still there too. You can go get that, but if I see y’all like turning up, I can turn up too! It’s not hard.

What do you hope to see The Husel become in music in five years or so?

The Husel: I want it to matter. I want it to be something that people like for whatever reason. People take stuff way too deep when it comes to entertainment. I’m just an artist being creative. People should stop trying to micromanage and nitpick at what I’m doing, since I don’t really have it all figured out, but do you like it? [laughs] Why not stop wasting energy focusing on the elements of it that you don’t dig, because you don’t have to subscribe to it. You don’t have to follow me on social media, or buy my music. I’m not rallying for your attention, you don’t have to like it. Why I’m doing is not contingent on your approval. I’m doing it for those who do like it and do want to support it.
