Civil Interview: Rico Love Gets Candid About Usher, Being Black In R&B, And The “Scrapped” Brandy Project
by Staff Editor
How are you feeling about the upcoming release of your solo album Turn The Lights On?
I’m super excited about the album coming out; it’s been a long time coming. I’m really anxious to see the reception of real music fans and those who want to hear music that’s talking about something. I don’t consider this album an R&B project, even though I’m singing on most of the records. I don’t think it has a genre, just like myself as an artist. I rhyme just as much as I sing. I’m also very direct [with this album.]
What do you hope fans take away from this project following their first listen?
I just hope they understand the depth in it. It’s really the story of how success has altered my perspective of relationships, love, and interaction between two people. It even taps into the fidelity that comes into play, as well as the egos and emotions that come with that success. I came in the game through Usher on his Confessions album, so being able to see that and understand how far those projects go when they really have a true story made me want to do that. I wanted to make a record that really had substance.
Have you been able to work with Usher on his new album at all?
No, we haven’t really worked together in the studio for like a year or so. He hasn’t really been recording lately. I’m really particular with the role I want to play. I’m not really into wasting my time anymore. Usher is one of my close friends, but I’m not going to allow anybody to waste my time. I’m not turned on by the idea of doing a bunch of songs for an artist, and them being scrapped for the flavor of the week. I think that’s what happens often times with artists. They’re so afraid.
People honestly need to acknowledge Rico Love’s own game more often this guy has helped to establish one hit wonders! Love loveee this interview Lindsey, it def is making me look forward to what’s he’s going to drop in the future!
