I read that you’d rather celebrate your debut album’s 20th anniversary with a documentary like Nas did with Illmatic, what would you capture in your documentary?

Raheem DeVaughn: We’d capture the non-profit side of me, we started the Love Life foundation so my efforts with that. The recording process because a good friend of mine, King Dope Gonzales, he’s always like ‘man you got to have a camera on you when you create. If people saw the process they’ d be like wow.’ I think it would entail personal interviews of my peers. When the world sees what DJ Jazzy Jeff feels about me or whoever, you pull a name out the hat – MC Lyte. Whoever. These people that are like peers but also like friends and also fans. And I’m fans of their music. And they’re fans of the culture. People kind’ve perceive and see you differently. Far too long I think I’ve been quiet and then sometimes still humble but loud. Sometimes you got to be loud.

You have been on plenty of tours, do you approach touring any differently now compared to when you first started your career?

Raheem DeVaughn: I’m at a crossroads with touring because I’ve done so much of it that now I want to take my show to another level. I’ve stripped it down. Sometimes you got to break yourself completely down and build yourself up. One of the first things that we’re doing, not just for money purposes, but for artistry – we’re taking one band out. The transitions are quick, we don’t have fans waiting all night, we can just perform and everybody just kind’ve hitting it and quitting it. A lot of my stuff is improvisational so I think I’m going to learn a lot about myself. As the tour goes on, I’ll come up with cool ideas in redefining who Raheem DeVaughn is live.

What are your top three tour essentials?

Raheem DeVaughn: I love the fact that I get a lot of rest believe it or not. Riding that bus, I be in a coma on that bus. Staying in touch with family, my kids, making sure business is getting handled. And these are in no particular order but if I had to say number 1 it’d be my connection with the fans.

Best tour city to grab food?

Raheem DeVaughn: L.A. – they’re very health conscious. Anywhere where I can get a good fish or veggie meal or a smoothie – that type of thing – I’m happy.
