As your album revolves around finding love and happiness on your own terms, how have you managed to achieve that in your own life?

Estelle: It’s an everyday struggle. It came down to, do I write a record or do I sing about what I’m going through now which is just being bold, being single and living on my terms. Or, do I write about this idea of being happy that I’m not quite to yet. Me, I’m just trying to be good. I want to be a good human. A nice human. Someone that somebody, my friends and my family enjoy being around and loved for being here. That’s literally what my whole thing has been, just being a good human and however long it takes me to get there, it is what it is. If I find love in the middle of that, that’s awesome, if not I’m just trying to be a good human.

How do you find a way to balance being happy and working?

Estelle: One thing I’m not a fan of the self-help books and that sort of thing. I don’t read any of them. I read one and it was Oprah’s [Winfrey]. I read the book and it touched on a lot of things that I did so I relate to that because I did that. I’m awesome, I’m fucking amazing, I look pretty – just being cool with yourself and in your skin and it’s a daily thing. And if it ain’t, don’t hide behind your affirmations either – do something about it. If you need to eat chips for a week, be ok with it, don’t let anybody shame you into feeling like crap. Change what you need to change, adjust what you need to adjust but it’s your life. It’s not about just being happy its more like just be comfortable.

Which of the 12 tracks do you feel embodies all four themes on True Romance?

Estelle: To me, “All That Matters,” because of the intent and the conversation I had with myself and my producer when I was writing it.  I was really at that point where I was writing down everything I want in a man and in a relationship in my life and everything like that. Wishing for the best and hoping for amazing but keeping it realistic. You want to remember the moments when you’re happiest and most uncertain. You’re scared, you’re passionate, you’re on your B.S. but it is all aiming towards true love.
