It’s been a long journey for Big Sean over the years, and loyal fans have definitely watched his music grow tremendously with each new project he puts out. Although he may not follow the same style as J. Cole and Kendrick, who are much more intense thought-provoking rappers, or Drake, who puts his emotions on the fore-front, he does have a style about him that can’t be matched right now. Yes, Sean is definitely a main voice we hear in today’s turn up music, as well as songs we want to use to curse people out. He might not speak on today’s key issues within the country, or around the world, but his sound, and lyrical flow, is pretty distinguishable.

Every so often, Sean will drop a lyrical gem that either goes above people’s heads, or blends into the turn-up beat we all rock along with. That doesn’t go against the fact that he can spit. He may not be speaking as intellectually relevant as Kendrick typically does, but we do have to give him credit for putting out his verse on “Control” and letting it go right before K. Dot’s. Boldness is not something we see in hip-hop these days. Many will make moves to take risks, but the ones who actually take them can be counted on our fingers.

Hip-hop needs risk-takers like Big Sean, as it shows hunger. A lot of artists in hip-hop have decreased that hunger level once they’ve reached success, but Sean is someone who definitely is only getting stronger as he goes along. He may not be matching the sales or subject matter of Cole, Kendrick, and Drake, but he shows the potential ability to walk with the legends in the future. Hey, if Kanye West believes in him the way he does, that has to be proof that there is some creative genius within him we may not see on the surface. Big Sean is making more silent noise, and it’s time we tune him in. – Lindsey India
