Is The Sexy Female Rapper Role Played Out?

I could definitely find myself bumping Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” before anything else, because it’s a much more innovative song representing for the ladies in hip-hop culture. When it comes to today’s music, I find myself voluntarily pressing play on a Jean Grae or even Dej Loaf track quicker than going on Instagram to see if there’s our femcees twerking to their new joints, or even Trina showing off her deliciously flawless legs.

Yes, sex sells. That’s been a proven fact throughout history. I personally, however, think it no longer serves the same purpose it should in hip-hop. In times like today, where racial and social injustices are so overwhelming in this country, innovation is much more needed. While I love to turn up in the right setting, and take in the beauty of a thirst trap on social media, I don’t find as much of a desire to tune into a lot of new music from the sexy females with an open-mind. Even though I have been pleasantly surprised many times before, I’ve found that the sexier a rapper gets, the more the bars slack. The focus has shifted from spitting a hot 16, and moved onto appealing to a particular market from looks. Maybe it’s time for the females to go harder on the music, and loosen up the tight, curve-fitting clothes, or lack thereof. It’s certainly cool to be sexy, but looking in rap past, that’s all some female MC’s become, when there’s always room for more lyrical legends. –Lindsey India

Love this article. I’m the manager of a up n coming female artist out of Boston. My main concern is will her lyrics go unheard bc of the recent history of successful female mcs being sex symbols before they are taken seriously lyricly. My goal is to break the mold and transcend the genre.
