Excuse me Missy Elliott, you stole the show at halftime of Super Bowl XLIX and you have three singles in the top ten on iTunes, my hip-hop mind suddenly wishes it was the year 2003 again. You teased us earlier by hitting the stage for “Ladies Night” at the 2014 Soul Train Awards and we let you slide, this time we won’t. Ms. Misdemeanor it is time to strike now!

Outside of the questionable play call that closed the Super Bowl, the talk of the Sunday evening classic was Missy Elliott’s appearance. Hip-Hop clearly misses Missy. Not because we don’t love Nicki Minaj, because we all do, not because we still haven’t learned to appreciate Iggy Azalea or there is a lack of love for the women who are working hard in rap every day. It’s simply because no one has been or can be what Missy Elliot is to the game.

I’m sure while everyone jammed to “Lose Control,” there were thoughts of “when is Missy going to release some new music?” A question that I have been pondering over for years. I’m sure she and Timbaland have a stash somewhere they have cooked up ready for “that day.”

Examining the game there is a place for Missy today, in fact, a place for Missy has never left. As the creator of classics like “Get Ur Freak On,” Missy is always innovative, creative, and full of energy and hot lines, what more can you ask for?

More importantly, the return of Missy Elliott brings more depth to the female region of rap and that’s never a bad thing. More femcees bring different styles, more perspectives and subject matter and more friendly competition.

So Missy, what you waiting on? The stage is set, make that return and take hip-hop by storm like we know you can.
