Civil Scope: Tatiana King-Jones

What’s your tech geek “moment-of-being”?
Tatiana King-Jones: One good moment would be when I was in high school. One day we decided we were going to have a trivia thing where we were basically going to see who was a bigger nerd and for one of the questions we were talking about Dreamcast. Everyone was giving all of the wrong answers and I was like “128 bits. It came out in December”’ I started spitting crazy information about it and everyone was like ‘Yo, where did that come from?’ It’s funny now, and it’s kind of corny, but to me that was big because people were like “You really know what you’re talking about and you’re really into it.”
One thing that I’ve noticed Fan Bros does well is talk about the diverse representation, or lack thereof, in entertainment. How do you feel that’s being handled?
Tatiana King-Jones: When we started we were one of the few people in that podcast space to speak to people of color in the world of nerds but there are so many other shows out there. People of color are being represented more in these major comic book movies. You have the new Captain America that’s a black man. So I think it’s in a better place than where it was maybe 10, 15 years ago. But at the same time we have a long way to go because we’re looking for an even greater mainstream acceptance.
What’s it like being the female voice of Fan Bros?
Tatiana King-Jones: It’s fun. I always feel comfortable with my crew. When we have a female guest it’s nice to have another woman in the room. But when I’m by myself it’s great because sometimes when guys get together, all of their communication is from that lens of being a man. And then the second lens of being a man of color. Being a woman of color and being able to give that perspective and be that soundboard and be able to reflect from a different point of view is amazing. I really appreciate that I have that position within the group.
I am a huge fan of the show ! Congrats Tati!
So proud of you friend! Doing your thing.
