And he certainly is the people’s people as his fans, armed with signs, let the board know they terribly messed up as far as the Best Rap Album category is concerned with a peaceful protest. Up to earn the award is Iggy Azalea, ScHoolboy Q, Common, Wiz Khalifa, Eminem and Childish Gambino.

After witnessing Macklemore grab the Best Rap Album award right under Kendrick Lamar’s nose last year, it is expected for hip-hop to be on edge coming into this award season. This year, the crop of nominees represent the evolution of the culture pushing the envelope to mash more genres and further convolute the criteria of what is considered a “rap album.”

More of what is coined “hip-pop” is blending in with hip-hop – garnering air play on both respective genre’s stations. As it stands, if you’re in New York you wouldn’t expect to hear any of YG on Z-100 but you can be certain to hear Iggy on that station as well as Power 105 and Hot 97.

YG’s My Krazy Life had a bigger first week, pushing 59, 703 copies and landing itself at the No. 2 spot on the Billboard charts – what could have been No. 1 had “Frozen” not taken over. Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic was neck-and-neck moving 52,000 copies and landing at No. 3 during her first week.

While we would love to see YG and Kendrick Lamar receive these distinguished honors for their contributions to the culture, J. Cole couldn’t have said it any better than the bars dedicated in “Fire Squad” to this very situation.

While silly niggas argue over who gon’ snatch the crown
Look around, my nigga, white people have snatched the sound
This year I’ll prolly go to the awards dappered down
Watch Iggy win a Grammy as I try to crack a smile
I’m just playin’, but all good jokes contain true shit

With all that being said, we will still tune in to the 57th Grammy awards February 8th at 8p.m. EST on CBS. Our heads may roll at the winners taking home the coveted award but the sooner we accept that unfortunately the Grammy’s board aren’t made up of hip-hop enthusiasts and tastemakers, the sooner we will sit and enjoy the event for what it is.

They never loved us.
