One of rap’s legendary groups hail from the stomping grounds of Staten Island, New York. Natives of the borough, the group put on for their hood in the visuals for “C.R.E.A.M.,” cut off their first LP Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers. It was shortly after this video made its reveal, a friend of the Wu named Case was chocked to death by a cop in the Park Hill Projects according to RZA.
“This was 20 years ago, and he wasn’t a white cop, he was a black cop and he choked Case til he died,” RZA told Jaime Lowe of Gawker.
Now that a Grand Jury ruled a decision of no indictment following a police officer’s illegal, fatal chokehold of Eric Garner, the MC offered his opinions on race and cops. “The system works but only in certain cases,” he said. “When you run a red light, the camera light flashes and takes a picture of your plate. You will get a ticket, you will get charged. Because there’s a picture, whether it shows your face or not. Here we have a man who was killed and there is a clear image of it, but there’s no indictment.”
Despite the obvious unfair treatment of the matters, RZA doesn’t view all cops as bad citing that he has various family members who are or were members of the police force.
