Civil Interview: Dej Loaf Is Trying To Be A Legend
by Staff Editor
You tweeted recently about how you wanted people to stop making remixes to “Try Me.” If you had to pick one, which remix would be your favorite?
Dej Loaf: Well, I have a new favorite. T.I. dropped a verse. He killed it! Nobody heard it yet.
Who would you want to see take on the remix?
DL: Lil’ Wayne. Drake, too, but Lil’ Wayne for sure.
How do you feel about the state of female rap?
DL: It’s alright, I guess. You got Iggy Azalea. Nicki [Minaj] been holding it down by herself for so long that you have people like Iggy who can come in and try to help. Then there’s myself, but I don’t want to toot my own horn – beep beep! I’m happy Remy Ma is back and that’s why I put her on the remix. I been rocking with her since she stepped in the game. I think her going to prison kind of messed it up. She definitely would have been on that level.
Since you’re from Detroit, how do you feel about being right in the footsteps of Big Sean and Eminem?
DL: It’s a good feeling. It’s different sides of music. You have the Eminems, you have the Big Seans, and it’s good to see different parts of Detroit from the East to the West. Everybody got their own part story of Detroit. My music doesn’t sound like Big Sean’s or Em’s. I heard Eminem was trying to reach out. We got some stuff, man. Who knows.
What’s next for you this year?
DL: I’ve got some shows and I’m going to be working on the album. Mixtape dropped and I hope everybody like it, man. I’ve been sitting on that for a minute, so it’s like I gave that away. I’m just working on the album now. I’m signed to Columbia, so we’re jut going to work hard. I’m trying to be a legend, so whatever it takes to do that.
